Monday Mash-Ups: Pepsi Chicken Lays and "Breaking Abbey"

Some of the sweetest occasions in life are those times you are confronted with a perfectly-executed intersection of things that are great on their own, but even better together: Chevy Chase singing Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al," John Travolta's face on Nicolas Cage's body,  Girl Talk: the world's greatest mash-up D.J., and "The Hobbit" menu at Denny's come to mind.   But not since the KFC Double Down has there been a more ridiculous, artery-blocking, nutritionally-void, quintessentially American amalgam of a junk food fantasy than Lay's new Pepsi/Chicken-flavored potato chips.


 Yes, you read that right: never again must you rely on your own rapid-fire mouth-shoveling to enjoy the taste of chicken, Pepsi, and potato chips simultaneously.  Never again must you stop your entire car at a Kentucky Fried Chicken to savor these coveted all-American fast food flavors: now, Pepsi and chicken is tailored to your busy life.  Imagine your road trips, your lunch meetings forever transformed, your need for knives and forks and sporks forever diminished by the one-bag convenience of these magic chips.  Or, as Gawker put it: 
Two thousand twelve. The future. We order our hair online and we get our clothes from a pill. We don't have time to cut a piece of chicken or open a can of soda. We only have time for chips.
Sadly, the chips are currently made and only available in China.  But let's face it: what's more fundamentally American than that?


In the spirit of excellent mash-ups, I bring you "Breaking Abbey," which -- and I say this with much knowledge and reverence of Colbert's media empire --  is quite possibly the greatest thing Stephen Colbert has ever contributed to the entertainment world.  Its title is not misleading: here are the men of Downtown Abbey acting out an episode of "Breaking Bad."  The best part is you keep thinking its over, then it isn't.
